Arena Construction

Over the years we have built arenas on many different types of sites from a back garden to some of the steepest hills in the country. One thing we have learnt is that soil conditions and water tables can vary between the closest of sites. We believe there is no job too big or small and no job is impossible. Our standards and knowledge are second to none, from which we have built our reputation on this. Our arenas have proven to stand the test of time and the great British weather!

Once a site has been chosen, the first stage is to level out the site whether that be a complete dig out or a cut and fill, which is where one half of the site is dug out and then used to build up the other half to achieve a level base. The drains will be dug within the arena base. All drains will lead to an outlet which can be directed into a soakaway, ditch or stream.

The fencing will then be erected or pegs and boards if you are having an unfenced arena. We use a geotextile woven membrane between the soil level and the stone base, this serves two purposes, one to stabilise the levelled ground and two to stop the stone and soil mixing. This is why it is laid throughout the whole arena and within the drains.

Then a clean stone will be laid on top of the geotextile membrane and in the drains on top of the perforated pipes which will then be levelled and a non-woven, fabric type membrane will be laid. This is used because of its drainage abilities and its non-slip properties; it allows the water to go through the riding surface without the arena surface being washed between the stone or the stone contaminating the surface. Then your chosen surface will be laid.

Choice of Surfaces

Silica Sand, Fibre, Rubber, Pemixed and Waxed surfaces, Our most popular is the Silica Sand and Fibre mix. Others available please enquire. Top ups also available.

Silica Sand

This is the main component of any surface; it should be sub angular grains so that it compacts firmly whilst still enabling drainage.

Fibres

We use synthetic fibres which stabilise the sand and not only provide more support but also a slight cushioning on impact. It also helps with water retention whilst minimalizing the effect of frost, aiding in a more consistent ride.

Rubber

We use wire free rubber chips approx. 20-40 mm in size. The rubber is an ideal topping for a sand and fibre school as it aids water retention in the summer and protects against frost in the winter and helps protect against wind erosion. Also provides a more cushioned surface for horse and rider whilst remaining a non-slip surface.

Cold Spray Wax

Cold Spray Wax can be used to bring back to life a previously a waxed surface or it can be sprayed on a non waxed surface to ensure a more consistent ride.

Lunge Rings and All Weather Gallops

A lunge ring can be constructed to any size and is a treasured resource to any equestrian property or yard. It provides a safe facility to work and exercise your horse especially when breaking. Usually circular or hexagonal in shape to eliminate wasted areas, the construction is the same as used in our arenas.

A gallop can be a valuable asset for training your horses all year round, whether it is for racing or general fitness and exercise. Our gallops allow for a safe surefooted ride whatever the weather to turn your horse into a winner.

Refurbishments

Bringing your old tired arena back to life for many more years of use.

Fencing and Groundworks

Many different types of fencing and gates available from electric tape to post and rail, with x fence becoming a popular all round fence.
